Iraq’s Kurdistan region to hold elections

The semi-autonomous Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, which voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence last year in a referendum rejected by Baghdad, will hold an election on Sept. 30.

A Kurdistan Regional Government media official said KRG Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani had approved the date.

The vote should elect both a parliament and a president for Kurdish regions which have gained self-rule in 1991, when a U.S-led coalition forced Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi army to withdraw from them in the wake of his eight-month occupation of Kuwait.

Mauritania’s government has confirmed legislative elections will be held on September 1 amid a row over a newly-created electoral commission.

Mauritanians will choose members of parliament as well as regional and local councillors.

The country’s opposition said in April it would contest in the upcoming legislative and municipal elections after previously boycotting votes in the country.

The National Forum for Democracy and Unity (FNDU), seen as a radical opposition group, has declined to participate in a number of votes against President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz and his government, but said it would take part in the September elections.
