Turkey’s Erdogan to discuss Syria with Macron in Paris

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will visit Paris on Jan. 5 to meet his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, with the conflict in Syria high on the agenda, a source in the French president’s office said on Saturday.

Among the regional crises the two leaders plan to discuss, there would be a particular focus on Syria as well as on the Palestinian situation, the source said, weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Gulf Cup moved to Kuwait

Kuwait will make its much-awaited return to international football as host of the prestigious Gulf Cup starting December 22, it was confirmed Friday.

The 23rd edition of the tournament was to be held in Qatar but was offered to Kuwait as a gesture of friendship and solidarity for staunchly standing by the country during the course of the blockade imposed on it by Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain with support from Egypt.

The tournament will go ahead with no change in dates and with the representation of all the eight teams as originally planned.

Turkish President calls Islamic summit on Jerusalem

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is calling a summit of the main pan-Islamic body in Istanbul on December 13 to discuss the expected US move to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

“In the face of developments that arouse sensitivity over the status of Jerusalem, Mr President is calling a leaders’ summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in order to display joint action among Islamic countries,” presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told reporters in Ankara.

Emmanuel Macron visits Qatar

French President Emmanuel Macron will make a short visit on December 7 to Qatar, said Monday the spokesman of the government.

The French president will travel directly to Doha from Algiers, where he will make an official visit on December 6, said Benjamin Griveaux. During this one-day trip, Mr. Macron should be received by Emir Sheikh Tamim Al Thani, whom he had hosted in Paris on September 15.

Kuwait to host GCC summit

Kuwait will go ahead and host an annual Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit next month, despite an ongoing rift between some member states.

The invitations to all six member Gulf states were sent out, the source said on Wednesday, with the summit due to be held on December 5-6.

The summit comes at a delicate time after Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt all cut ties with Qatar in June, accusing Doha of backing extremism and fostering ties with Iran – charges that Qatar vehemently denies.

Fresh talks on the Syria conflict will be held in Astana at the end of the month, Kazakhstan said Thursday, as part of a Turkey-backed push to end the six-year conflict.

The two-day meeting, which will take place Oct. 30-31 in the Kazakh capital, will be the seventh round of negotiations this year that are co-sponsored by regime backers Russia and Iran and opposition supporter Turkey.

Turkish-Egyptian Economic Forum

The first Turkey-Egypt Business Forum will be held on Nov. 26 in Istanbul, in an attempt to revive bilateral economic and trade ties that have been put on hold since the 2013 military coup in Egypt.

The forum will be held jointly by the Turkish-Egyptian Business Council of the Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK), the Turkish-Egyptian Businessmen’s Association (TUMIAD) and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

Two meetings will be held on different dates in Istanbul and Konya, and more than 100 businessmen from Egypt will join the forum.
